Starting a New Food Business?
Below is a summary of steps that must be taken before you can successfully run a food business.
Step 1: Find out the Rules
If you grow, manufacture, import, store, transport or sell food or beverage products, you need to meet certain food safety requirements. The way you trade in food determines the legislation you need to follow – you might need to operate under the Food Act, Wine Act, Animal Products Act, or Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Acts.
Step 2: Create a Plan or Programme
Under the Food Act 2014, you will need to follow a food control plan or national programme for making and selling food. Alternatively under the Animal Products Act you may need to follow a risk management programme. The plan or programme you need to complete depends on the rules you need to follow.
Step 3: Get Evaluated
The plan that was created needs to be evaluated by a recognized evaluator. (MyFood Plans are pre-evaluated so saves you time and money) )
Step 4: Register your Food Safety Plan
All food businesses need to be registered before you start making and selling food. There are 2 options for registering – either with MPI or with your local council.
Step 5: Get Verified
Once you have a plan or programme in place, you will need to get everything checked by a person (a verifier) to ensure you are making and selling safe and suitable food.
